Paul is working hard to encourage more sailors to get a fleet together for cruising and racing! NEW TO SAILING? Here are some answers to questions frequently asked! Can I learn sailing on a TIWAL? Yes. The TIWAL is designed to be simple and user-friendly and it is an ideal boat on which to learn. The TIWAL comes with a setup instruction booklet. There is no need to tie any complicated knots or use any tools! Where can I learn sailing? Many yacht clubs and sailing schools in Australia have classes all year round. Or you can get a sailing instructor to give you private lessons. What will a sailing lesson include? Qualified sailing instructors will give you lessons on wind and weather, safety factors, parts of the boat, points of sail, manoeuvring (tacking and gybing), and getting on and off the shore. St George is a lovely town on the Balonne River. It is an impressive river considering the drought.
It was a gentle breeze for sailing! We threw the Tiwal 2 in the water and I sailed up the river passing a couple of white ducks and a river cruise boat. We stayed at the Australian Hotel, which is right on the waterfront. The Country Music Festival was on and we laughed til we cried at the Bush Poet’s Breakfast! Hello Sailors,
Melinda Henshaw of TIWAL Australia and NZ here! Lake Eyre, Coongie Lakes, Cooper Creek, ... We weren't planning to come this far. But after hearing about Lake Eyre in flood and with two sailboats on board, we couldn't resist an adventure! 'You have got to go!' said the locals. We rang the Lake Eyre Yacht Club - there is not enough water in Lake Eyre so we headed to Innamincka and Coopers Creek. A sailor in the outback? We wouldnt have dreamed of it if we didnt have the TIWALS in the car. So an unplanned adventure began. Is it a new idea - ecotourism with a sailboat? You can go where motorboats are prohibited (many National Parks and Lakes ban motor-boats) and the TIWAL fits in the car or on the roof racks, making this a care-free way to travel AND have your toys! We have become the Nautical Nomads! To camp, we have two Tiwals (which double as inflatable mattresses), a plastic sheet, blankets and winter clothes. You may be better-equipped, but Tiwal makes new things possible with minimal effort. It was awesome! As this drought breaks the Australian Outback will become one of the most spectacular places on earth to sail! The wildflowers, the birdlife, the isolation of the desert, the stars...amazing. We now have a demo boat for sale and we taking orders for new boats. Please get in touch with me on 0487 081 573 and we will make it happen! Happy sailing, Melinda After visiting Walgett, NSW, we heard about Lake Eyre in flood. We had two TIWALS on board and the thought of sailing in amongst the wildlife was too tempting, after all, we were halfway there!
We rang the Lake Eyre Yacht Club, but we heard that the lake wasn't in fact flooded all the way south. We decided to travel to Innamincke and Coopers Creek to sail. We heard Coongie Lakes would be a great place for sailing too (no motor boats allowed). We werent planning to go this far so the only equipment we had were two TIWALS (which doubled as mattresses!) a plastic sheet and some borrowed blankets! Video of our adventures is coming soon... TIWAL is now taking orders for September delivery! Today we met with with local reporter, Deirdre, of Stanthorpe, to sail on Storm King Dam, Stanthorpe’s only water supply. This part of Australia is in drought and the water level is very low. The farmers are also getting very short of hay. I hope these regions get some rain in the next few weeks.
